Brooks Brothers…. Burgers Buttoned Down in Noda
You won’t find many suits at Brook’s (brothers) Sandwich House in Noda. This local burger dive is famous with Charlottean’s that know what a good burger is. Truck drivers, utility workers and local color patiently wait to get to the tiny “standing room” only counter from 11 – 2 on week days. This cinder block building at 2710 N. Brevard opened in 1973. Back then the Noda business was mostly factory and mill workers looking for a quick bite. In 1991 brothers Scott and David (their twins) took over the business from their dad and although the regulars have changed a bit… (the factories have closed), there are still lots of workers looking for a great cheap lunch.
Some people have a hard time finding this place… and a quick look at some of the map sites have it wrong. So if you are going….from uptown take N. Brevard and once you go under Matheson it will be on your right. It is across from the back corner of Highland Mills. If you are coming from N. Davidson St. turn on N. Brevard and it will be on your left about a block down. Don’t blink going around the corner or you will miss it.
Once the nice lady with the scratch pad says “next”, don’t hesitate or you’ll feel the pressure of the next group pushing up behind you. I recommend the cheese burger with chili, onions, mustard and slaw. The chili is good… but I don’t know what makes that burger so yummy. Could it be the years of seasoned grill top, the fresh soft bun, or just that those Brook’s Brothers magic mojo. Don’t go looking for the tables though. Outside there is a long table to lean against… standing only… where you can swap stories with cops, beer haulers and a a few good old boys.
The sandwich shop is open from 7 – 2 so you can swing in early to get a breakfast sandwich. Other good bets are the hot dogs and loaded baloney. Most people order a burger and a hot dog – so don’t be shy! If you like Brook’s Burgers leave a comment! The best description of your sandwich favorite will win lunch for two.
